The International Federation of Translators (FIT) is the international federation of professional associations of translators, interpreters and terminologists. Representing over 100 professional associations in 65 countries, FIT actively promotes professionalism, fostering high standards, best practice and recognition.
By working together to consolidate a united, sustainable, recognised profession to fulfil the expanding global need for translation, associations benefit from both local and international activities coordinated by a federation with global presence and established connections.
FIT is proud of its international relationships and reach, built over many years of positive collaboration. It has consultative status with the UN/UNESCO, liaison status on ISO standards, and has Memorandums of Understanding with its external partners such as WIPO, WASLI, EULITA, and CEATL.
Supporting members at an international level by working to build community, visibility and a sustainable future for the profession, FIT produces position papers and press releases, holds webinars on issues of interest to the profession, provides forums of communication such as its member E-group and publishes its academic journal, Babel.
Founded in Paris in 1953, it has regional centres in Europe, Latin America, North America, Africa and Asia, promoting regional cooperation and communication.

About the fit Congress
Every three years, the International Federation of Translators FIT (Fédération Internationale des Traducteurs) holds its flagship event, the FIT World Congress, choosing a different international location and host each time. The World Congress is also known as the Open Congress, as it is open to all who wish to attend, whether they are a FIT member or not. It is held alongside the FIT Statutory Congress, FIT’s statutory meeting for its members.
FIT is pleased to announce that the XXIII FIT World Congress will take place at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva, Switzerland on 4 – 6 September 2025.
FIT Congresses are a triennial event, where interpreters, translators and terminologists, external stakeholders, representatives of UN agencies, academics and thought leaders can explore overarching themes around technology, literary translation, audiovisual translation, indigenous languages, education and professional development, and the past and future of the global profession. The XXIII FIT World Congress will be no exception. Attendees will have the chance to hone their craft and network with international colleagues at the beautiful venues on the shores of lake Geneva.

About THE Congress THEME
Mastering the Machine: Shaping an intelligent future
Past Congress themes have looked at the theme of technological change for professional translators, interpreters and terminologist and the current challenges it provides for practitioners, service providers and clients alike.
This Congress theme embraces the view of the future in the light of the most seismic technological change in some years, the advent of AI and its increasing application across all sectors of society, through presentations, panel discussions, workshops, and networking opportunities with like-minded professionals and experts from across the globe. It will take trends and developments in the profession and put them into sharp focus for forging a pathway to the future.
The Congress languages are English, Spanish and French, with the addition of sign language interpreting as needed. Keynotes, plenary presentations and panel discussions will be interpreted.
ABOUT THE VENUE
THE WORLD INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY ORGANIZATION (WIPO)
Geneva, Switzerland
This congress will be unlike any other. It will be hosted at the World Intellectual Property Organization, a specialized agency of the United Nations whose mission is to lead the development of a balanced and effective global intellectual property system that enables innovation and creativity for the benefit of all. In carrying out this mission, WIPO has a large translation operation that covers for example international treaties and regulations, conference documentation, reports and website localization, and translation relating to international patent and trademark filings. WIPO also provides interpreting services for its meetings, the WIPO Pearl 10-language terminology database, and the WIPO Translate neural machine translation (NMT) tool. This event therefore promises a prestigious setting on the shores of Lake Geneva at the foot of the Alps for an extraordinary gathering of professionals.
